With the Olympics on the horizon, this summer will undoubtedly see a surge in children keen to partake in sports and activities that the team GB squad excel in. One of the sports that Great Britain excels in is equestrianism, with the teams picking up five medals in the 2012 Games – three of which were gold.

Of course, the perception of horse riding as a hobby is that it is a cost-prohibitive sport, but that’s not always the case as we found out at Ponderosa Equestrian Centre, which is located in Llanwern, Newport.

A BHS approved riding school, Ponderosa was established by owners Alison and Richard Davies 27 years ago. Having moved from premises in Pontypool, Ponderosa has built itself a strong reputation for teaching riders to be skilled and highly competent equestrians.

Taking students from the age of four, whether you or your youngster simply wants to learn to ride for fun or has aims for a career in the sport, there are ponies and horses to suit, along with highly trained instructors who are experienced in all disciplines. Current riders range from the ages of four to 76,
so whatever level you’re at, there’s something for everyone at this welcoming and friendly yard.

“We love seeing new riders join us here,” said Alison when we joined her. “It’s always a pleasure to see riders of any age grow in confidence and skill all while developing a love for the horses – especially children.”
Richard and Alison have many years of experience in training equestrians. Both have trained young riders to compete at a national level, with many of their
past and present riders representing Wales, England and Great Britain at show jumping and dressage.

Lessons are available either as part of a group session or as private tuition, with prices starting at just £17.50 per hour for a group lesson. Riders are taught to ride skilfully and correctly and are also encouraged to learn about pony and horse care.
As well as lessons, Ponderosa also runs a series of special horsey themed days throughout the year.

From Prince and Princess Days to intensive training and dressage days, these special events allow riders to experience owning their own pony for a day as well as taking part in gymkhana games and specialised training. These run
every school holiday, so be sure to keep an eye out on the Ponderosa Facebook page for upcoming events (@PonderosaEC).

So, if there’s a youngster (or not so young) in your life that’s inspired by the Team GB riders at this year’s Olympic Games, why not book them in for lesson at Ponderosa? Who knows, one day they could be on the Olympic podium collecting a medal?
