Lewis Evans is looking forward to toasting Newport Gwent Dragons victories over the river from Rodney Parade after taking over The Lamb.

The flanker and his business partner, Richard Davenport, are now landlords of the famous Newport pub in Bridge Street, which was given a complete facelift in 2013 and was named as the city’s best watering hole by the Campaign for Real Ale last year. Voice caught up with the pair after their official launch party to ask them a few quick-fire questions. Here’s what they had to say:

You and Richard were looking for office space for your Life Education Company when you saw The Lamb was available on the market, why did you decide to open a pub – was this always the plan?

The Lamb is an institution, being very local, local boys we have always wanted to play a positive part in our community. Whether that’s going into schools and providing kids with an understanding after school. Or giving Newport a Pub to be proud of.

The lamb is one of the oldest pubs in Newport, how does it feel to be part of its colourful history?

It was only the other day that my Granddad told me how my late grandmother would frequent in the Lamb. It’s important for us to make sure we don’t make the lamb something it’s not and make sure we are true to its past and put our small stamp on its future.

Since your official opening night on September 10th, what has the response been like with the people of Newport?

Humbling would be an understatement, i think you always hope that the local community shows their  support but it has been over and above what we would have hoped for.

The Lamb is well-known for stocking an excellent choice of real ales, what’s currently on tap and do you have any guest ales for October?

We are establishing a good relationship with a few local brewers and aim to have a good selection of ales available at all times. Baa brewery and Mad dog are currently on selection and we look forward to having a 'meet the brewers' night at some stage in the near future.

What else have you got stocked behind the bar?

We have plenty on offer! We are famous for a few of our unique cocktails the 'Orgasm' and 'Hulk' and are hoping to bring some more seasonal drinks to add to our menu. Whether it be a refreshing Poretti, thirst quenching Thatchers or quality red and white wine, we have it available depending on whatever takes your fancy!

What’s yours and Richard’s favourite pint?

Richard is partial to a Guinness or one is more than happy to sample our new ales on pump, however I prefer to try whatever new comes available from the spirit section such as our Tia Maria Frapp and Gin cocktails we have recently introduced.

We hear you have an exclusive range of pies from Pieminister, what can diners look forward to trying from the menu?

We do! They started being served this Monday (19th) and there has been much interest in our selection of three pies beef Moo-dog, vegetarian Heidi and 'Chicken of Aragon'. All come with a plentiful helping of mash, mushy pies and gravy, perfect for the winter season coming up. The Pieminister pies have a fantastic range which we look forward to trying ourselves!

What else is on the menu that you highly-recommend?

We also serve other good old fashioned pub food with sausage and mash from local butchers, curry and our now infamous chilli 'my way'. All have head great receptions on our quiz evening on Wednesday and would encourage everyone to try our lunch time menu!

Your monthly #PoshNosh evenings with Chef Steve White are quite popular, what’s on the menu for November? Are there any spaces left?

Our first "Posh Nosh' evening in October has sold out which is amazing for us. Steve has a great reputation which has resulted in a great following at The Rhuperra and at the Lamb on the second Thursday of each month we will host an evening to celebrate great quality food.

Obviously sport will play a major role at The Lamb, are you hoping Dragons fans will come and show their support before and after matches?

Absolutly. Richard and I have a love of sport and we are a BT Sport pub showing Pro12, football and rugby Premiership games. We would like to build a relationship with the Dragons and their supporters club and have a regular Q&A hosted after each home game with some of the boys so that fans and players have a chance to talk about the game.

You recently had your first post-match Q&A with Dragons players in September at The Lamb, how successful was this with the fans?

We have had two, after the Zebre and Munster games. Both were a great success and we hope that the fans enjoy seeing the boys company off the field as well as on it.

Do you have any other form of entertainment happening throughout the week?

We have a Wednesday quiz night that has been great to get the pub busy during the week and we do have live music occasionally and hope to get a mixture of rock, jazz and pop music to get the atmosphere electric throughout the week. We will be hosting several events over the next few months from networking events, meet the brewers’ nights to whiskey tasting and cheese and wine night. Have to keep an eye out on social media and our boards for the upcoming dates.

And what are you doing for Christmas and the festive period?

The Lamb has always been a winter pub and our favourite time of year. The pub with be looking festive to encourage people to come and celebrate the Christmas season in a great old style pub. We will be open to bookings throughout the week for Christmas parties, so just get in contact with us to book parties, food or any other general enquiries at baa@thelambnewport.com
