When you arrive at Teddies Nursery, at Celtic Springs Business Park, in Newport, it looks more like a plush office block than a day nursery. However, the ample space and modern facilities are dedicated to children’s well-being and happiness.

We talked to the manager, Charlene Burgess, about what makes Teddies Nursery special.
Charlene said: “Teddies is a modern, purpose-built nursery with plenty of space designed for playing, learning, eating, relaxing and sleeping. Our light, airy, big rooms provide the perfect environment for children with lots of energy, but we also make sure they’re comfortable and homely.”

Teddies Nursery is open to babies and children aged three months to four years old. It has fully-equipped baby, toddler and pre-school suites, with large play and rest areas.

“We have excellent learning resources and encourage children to explore and  use their imaginations whether they are a budding artist, musician, engineer
or chef.
“Our arts and crafts areas allow children to be creative; we have musical instruments, construction blocks and puzzles, plus a fully equipped toy kitchen with dishes, pots and pans. There is also a library and children are encouraged to take books home every week.”

Teddies Nursery has an experienced team of nursery practitioners who work closely with parents to make sure children are thriving.
“We know that parents worry, so we had web cameras installed throughout the nursery to provide reassurance. Using a secure password, parents can log in and watch their child at play. This is a great comfort to parents, especially
when their child first starts nursery.”

Teddies holds many events such as concerts, visits frommusicians, authors and children’s entertainers. Parents are invited to watch performances and to share their child’s achievements. There are lots of charity events – sponsored toddles have raised more than £5,500 for children’s charities.

Teddies Nursery has received awards from the Welsh Government for its nutritious meals and for teaching the importance of a healthy diet, physical activity, good oral health and developing friendships.

Charlene said: “We help the children to develop good social skills, for example at meal times we sit with children in our dedicated dining areas to encourage
communication in a friendly and relaxed environment. We encourage our older children to be independent by serving their own snacks and helping with recycling.”

Teddies has just completed a makeover of its garden areas.
Charlene said: “We had to use artificial grass to improve one of our gardens, as it kept getting waterlogged.
“It’s important that our children have plenty of opportunities to be active outside. The grass is fake, but we still encourage an interest in nature with herbs, flowering plants, bird tables and insect hotels.”
