The Darran, on St Mary Street in Risca, has been closed for two months while the pub underwent its biggest renovation project since 2003.

The pub dates back to the 19th century and was known as The Church House before it was changed to The Darran in the 1970s. A full internal redecoration has taken place and a change to the layout has made room for an extra 50 diners at the popular family pub. It officially reopened on Saturday, November 12 with a brand new menu and a host of new food and drink offers.

Manager Nate Powell said: “We’ve missed the buzz of the pub while it’s been closed so we couldn’t wait to reopen. “The refurbishment has gone really well. I’m sure it’s the best version of The Darran there’s ever been and people have already commented on how amazing the place looks.
“We’ve doubled the size of the team to 19 members of staff and they are a really fantastic bunch of people. We can’t wait to get started.”

The new menu sees the introduction of some fantastic dishes, including a Mexican style double chicken burger, minted lamb shank, leek and blue cheese risotto and indulgent chocolate profiterole gateaux. There’s also a stunning sharing banoffee cookie which is predicted to be a big hit.

There are a range of offers throughout the working week with Burger Night on a Monday, 25 per cent off all food on the grills menu on a Tuesday, two curries for £12 on a Wednesday night, £10 for selected bottles of wine on a Thursday and two steaks and a bottle of wine for £30 on a Friday.

There is also an evening set menu available every night of the week, with two courses for £9.50 and three courses for £11.50.

Nate added: “Our pub has always been a food-led business, we were named the area’s family restaurant of the year in 2015, but we have also increased our drinks offering.
“People are now looking for good quality cask ales so we’ve extended our options from three to five and we have also increased our draught lager range.
“We also added some premium spirits because our customers want quality and that’s what we are hoping to give them.
“Our customer base is quite a wide demographic of people, from families to retired professionals who love the range of food and the value for money.
“We look forward to welcoming regulars and new visitors to our wonderfully refurbished pub and restaurant.”
