With the Easter break and promise of warmer weather just around the corner, here’s how to make the most of your free time in Cardiff Bay.

TAKE IT EASY
Head to the Barrage to breathe in some fresh sea air and enjoy panoramic views of the Bristol Channel and Cardiff Bay. The Barrage embankment is flat, making it ideal for a gentle stroll, jog or cycle. You can also browse the free exhibitions; snap a selfie with the Enormous Crocodile; take the kids to the play area, skate plaza and outdoor gym; or tour the Bay in style on a boat ride.

GO BACK TO NATURE
Covering an area of around eight hectares, the Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve is located on the northern shore between St David’s Hotel and the River Taff. The area supports a rich diversity of plants and animals, including invertebrates, fish and other wildlife. A viewing platform extends out over the water, providing the perfect spot for bird watching.

GET AWAY FROM IT ALL
Just six miles off the coast of Cardiff, the picturesque island of Flat Holm is a tranquil haven with a sense of rugged wilderness. Its incredible history, flora and fauna can be explored on a guided tour, followed by a leisurely picnic and drink in the Gull and Leek, Wales’ most southerly pub. Get Easter Sunday off to a lively start by joining Cardiff Sea Safaris for their annual Easter Egg Hunt on the morning of 16 April. Go to visitflatholm.co.uk / bayislandvoyages.co.uk

ADDWATER
If it’s instant fun and an adrenaline boost that you’re after, hotfoot it down to Cardiff International White Water (CIWW). During the school holidays, the on-demand white water centre is running Family Rafting sessions, which see the level and speed of the water lowered to accommodate younger members of the family. Kids can also take part in paddle taster sessions, from just £10 per person, or hone their skills by signing up for 5-day Multi Activity or Paddle School, from £150 per person.

BE SPONTANEOUS
Why not try tackling Air Trail, the high ropes assault course that towers above the white water, or hire a bike from CIWW and explore the beautiful Bay Trail? Each activity costs £10 and there’s no need to book in advance – ideal for those impromptu days out. Visit ciww.com for further information.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT
At the end of a busy, fun-filled day, Mermaid Quay is the place to be for laidback cafés, stylish bars and an eclectic blend of restaurants in a spectacular waterfront location. For world-class entertainment, sit back and take in a top show at Wales Millennium Centre; or make your way to
The Red Dragon Centre, where you’ll find a cinema, bowling complex and casino all under one roof.
