The Ruperra on Caerphilly Road in Bassaleg is one of South Wales’ best kept secrets. This classic and traditional pub boasts over 140 years of colourful Welsh history, as well as providing the local community with a friendly place to dine, relax and socialise.

There are a variety of tempting menus to choose from at The Ruperra Arms, full of delicious meals which have been expertly crafted by head chef Steve White and his team.

Every lunch time, from noon until 3pm, you can take advantage of its luncheon menu, where you can get two courses for only £10.95 or three courses for £12.95. The a la carte menu is full of traditional classics and has a more gastro style feel to it compared to the usual offerings of normal pub grub establishments, served from 5pm until 9pm Monday to Saturday.

The Ruperra also offers unique meals from its ever-changing specials board. Voice got the chance to photograph a few of these dishes including Parma ham wrapped monkfish and charred pineapple with a mango and coconut salsa for £16.95, and also seared hake with a beetroot risotto, sautéed big prawns and sea water caviar for £15.95.

Sunday lunch is served in two sittings from noon until 2pm, and from 2.30pm until 4pm every week, and is priced at £8.95 for one course. There are three different roasts to choose from each week including beef, lamb and pork, and also a vegetarian option is offered.

Another popular item on the menu is afternoon tea, and since Steve posted a pic of it on the Ruperra’s Facebook, it has become in highly sought after.

Afternoon tea is by booking appointment only served from noon until 3.30pm Monday to Saturday, and is priced at £11.95 per person.
On Thursday, April 13, there will also be a special evening dedicated to the anniversary of the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Diners will be able to sample a deconstructed version of the first class menu, which diners enjoyed back in 1912. Spaces are limited and are priced at £60 per person.

Once a month, head chef Steve showcases his culinary skills with a special themed evening, and with April’s already sold out, he’s planning a special Jamaican day during the May Bank Holiday weekend, where he’s hoping to transform the car park into a Caribbean beach, complete with a steel band. Check the Facebook page for more details.

Don’t forget to set a date in your diary for June 24, as the third annual Ruperra Food and Blues Festival will take place on the grounds of the Graig Community Centre opposite the pub. People can look forward to artisan food and craft stalls, live music, and plenty of fun for all the family – simply not to be missed.

Pop along to The Ruperra Arms this spring and see why everyone is raving about its amazing food and hospitality.
