The Gwent Youth Wind Orchestra flies off to America to take part in the New York International Music Festival to be held in Carnegie Hall on Saturday, April 8th.

56 musicians with age ranges of 13-20 along with five staff members will
represent the Principality in this world renowned venue and prestigious Festival.

Almost two years in planning and preparation, this promises to be the
musical trip of a lifetime for all these young musicians from throughout Gwent.

We are hugely honoured that Gwent Youth Wind Orchestra has been invited to perform in the opening half of the Gala Concert and conductor Sean O’Neill, has chosen a programme that promotes Welsh music and composers and we are delighted that Welsh Euphonium Virtuoso, David Childs is our guest soloist.

David Childs is the foremost exponent of the euphonium in the world today and it is another huge experience for our students to be performing on the same stage alongside him.

The Festival also allows theWind Orchestra to perform in the Bandstand
of Central Park where they perform a programme of light music suitable to the venue, including amongst others, “Another Openin’ Another Show” and “New York, New York” and finishing with “Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau” just in case anyone wondered where we come from!

This is a trip that will last in everyone’s memory for a lifetime. To be able to say they performed in one of the world’s most venerated of concert venues and gave two world premieres alongside a musician of world class
renown is a fantastic experience and we are incredibly proud that we are able to offer these music students that experience through Gwent Music.

Funding for the trip has not been easy but through the hard work of the Friends of Gwent Music and all the players themselves through concerts and bag packing and Christmas time carolling, including a rather a wet and windy day on Newport Transporter Bridge in December 2015, monies have been raised to help make this trip possible.

It is a short, action packed tour but one that no-one will forget.
Our last fundraiser and pre-tour concert will take place in St John the Baptist Church on Risca Road, Newport on Sunday April 2nd at 2.30pm.
