More than 100 years ago, workers used to climb the stairs and walk across the gantry twice every day to save the halfpenny fares for the gondola ride. Why not follow in their footsteps and climb to the highest point of any of the Transporter bridges worldwide? Your reward is the fantastic view across the Bristol Channel from the top walkway, or you can try to spot the many Newport locations which have been used to film Dr Who.
The Bridge stands on the Wales Coast Path, and the gondola crossing itself forms part of the route. This makes it a part of a wider network of walks and cycleways, which also links to the National Cycle Network, and is a great stop off point on your journey.
During your visit, call into the Motor House and see Edwardian engineering in action – the original two 35 horsepower motors still power the gondola after 111 years.
The volunteer-operated Visitor Centre aims to open all year round (not always guaranteed), and The Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge can arrange for a guide to show you around. Pre-booked groups can visit throughout the year, not just during the summer, so why not bring your friends, colleagues or sports club for a day out with a difference!
