Horton’s Coffee House is the brainchild of Gavin Horton, an ex-steel worker for Tata Steel.

The former quality control man and self-confessed perfectionist has opened his coffee house at Millennium Walk within Newport city centre with an investment of £200,000.

And when it comes to coffee making equipment he has bought the best – an Italian La Marzocco espresso machine with “added extras”, of which there are just a few in the UK.

“I have a technical approach to everything and wanted to make and sell the best coffee I could,” said Gavin.

“I am a perfectionist – and I am aiming for the perfect cup of coffee.

“This has been a year in the making, with first ideas starting around November time of 2015.

“There’s a huge calling for café culture at the moment, and since the opening of Friars Walk there’s been a fantastic revitalisation of the City, with lots of people coming back into Newport.

“In keeping with an Italian theme, we offer authentic Italian pizzas which are handmade from a secret family recipe and baked to perfection in stone ovens.

“Our barista is from Italy and she’s given our pizzas her approval, stating that they taste as good, if not better than, the pizzas she has back home.

“To complement our great tasting coffee, which is farmed and roasted just over the Bristol channel, we have a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and pastries, which are handcrafted and baked fresh each morning by my
mum – during the festive period her homemade mince pies were a huge hit, and you simply must try one of her pain au chocolat with a cup of
freshly made coffee.

“Another feature, which has proven quite popular with our regulars, is our baby grand piano.

“Anyone and everyone is more than welcome to come along and showcase their skills as a pianist – as soon as people saw that we had a piano of Facebook, we’ve had quite a few artists in to wow the crowds. Moving forward we’ll be hosting acoustic music nights too.

“Another aspect that I looked into whilst doing my research was for working people who don’t have an office space, which is why we provide free Wi-Fi, as well as a copying and printing service. Additionally, we have an intended space for more private and intimate business meetings too, which can also be used for small clubs.

“I have also decided to be dog friendly, as a dog owner myself I know how difficult it can be to find a nice place that will let you bring your dog in from the cold.”

If you haven’t already been to check out this new coffee house yet, make sure that you do, as Voice highly recommends their pizzas and coffee.
